Jozani Forest is best known as an important habitat for the Zanzibar red
colobus monkey. This distinctive primate is endemic to Zanzibar, meaning
it occurs naturally nowhere else in the world.
During the walk, your guide will search areas where the monkeys are commonly
active. They may be seen resting, feeding, moving between branches or
interacting naturally with other members of their group.
Although the monkeys are often visible, they remain wild animals. Their
location and behavior can change according to the weather, time of day,
food availability and other natural factors.
Jozani–Chwaka Bay National Park protects a varied natural landscape that
includes groundwater forest, coastal vegetation, wet areas and mangroves.
These connected habitats support different species of plants, birds,
butterflies and small animals.
Your guide will explain how forest vegetation adapts to local soil and
moisture conditions and why preserving these habitats is important for
Zanzibar’s biodiversity.
When the mangrove section is accessible, the boardwalk offers a closer look
at the unusual roots that help mangrove trees survive in tidal, salty and
oxygen-poor ground.
The exact route may change according to weather, wildlife movement,
park instructions, trail conditions and access to the mangrove area.
Your driver will collect you from your Zanzibar accommodation at

We really liked Jozani Forest. We saw many red monkeys very close and they was not afraid from people. Our guide explained about the animals and different plants in the forest. The walk through mangroves was also very interesting. Nice short tour and good organisation.
Very peaceful and beautiful place to visit. The red colobus monkeys was the best part and we could take many good photos. Guide was friendly and knew a lot about the forest. It was little hot and humid, but the walk was easy and we enjoy it very much.

I recently took the Jozani Forest Walking Tour and it was an amazing experience. The tour guide was knowledgeable and friendly, and provided interesting information about the flora and fauna of the forest. The forest itself is stunning, with a diverse range of plant and animal life to observe. One of the highlights of the tour was seeing the rare and endangered Kirk’s red colobus monkey, which was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Overall, I highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Zanzibar who is interested in nature and wildlife.
