UNESCO Heritage

A Living Town Shaped by Many Cultures

Stone Town is not an open-air museum. It remains a living and active part of
Zanzibar City, where historic houses, shops, markets, mosques, churches and
family homes exist side by side.

Its architecture reflects the long connection between the East African coast,
the Arabian Peninsula, India and Europe. Your guide will help you understand
how these influences became part of Zanzibar’s distinctive Swahili identity.

Along the route, you will notice carved doors, coral-stone walls, shaded
courtyards, narrow commercial streets and seafront buildings that reveal
different chapters of the town’s history.

Heritage restoration notice:
Some historic buildings, including the House of Wonders and parts of the Old
Fort, may be closed or partially inaccessible because of ongoing restoration.
When entry is unavailable, the guide will explain their history from an
accessible exterior location.
