Join us at tours-zanzibar.com for a uniquely curated tour that combines the intriguing history of Prison Island with the sensory delight of a Zanzibar Spice Farm. Our Prison Island and Spice Farm Combo Tour takes you on an enchanting journey that unfurls the rich tapestry of Zanzibar’s past while indulging your senses in the tropical fragrances and flavors the island is renowned for.
Your journey begins with the historic Prison Island, also known as Changuu Island, named after its original purpose as a prison for rebellious enslaved people in the 1860s. However, it was never used as such and instead functioned as a quarantine station for yellow fever cases. You’ll hear these stories and more as you explore the island’s old quarantine station and the charming coral rag prison that still stands as a testament to the island’s past.
But Prison Island isn’t just about history. The island is also a sanctuary for the gentle giants of the Aldabra species – the Giant Tortoises. Introduced from Seychelles in the late 19th century, these magnificent creatures are now under conservation due to their dwindling numbers. You will have the rare opportunity to feed and interact with these friendly tortoises.
Prison Island is also known for its pristine white sandy beaches and the crystal-clear waters of the Indian Ocean. Don’t forget your swimsuits; you’ll have time to dive into the azure waters, soak up the sun on the beach, or explore the vibrant marine life with some snorkeling.
As we say goodbye to Prison Island, we set sail back to Zanzibar to continue our adventure. Prepare your senses as we whisk you to the famous Zanzibar Spice Farm. Zanzibar, known as the Spice Island, was an essential stop on the Spice Route, with traders from far and comprehensive searching for cloves, nutmeg, ginger, peppers, and countless other spices.
You’ll be enveloped by the aromatic allure of the spice farm as our guides take you on a sensory journey. Discover the secret behind the island’s moniker as you explore plantations of vanilla, cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, and many more. Our knowledgeable guides will show you how these spices grow, their traditional uses, and their significance in Zanzibari cuisine. You can touch, smell, and taste spices and tropical fruits. Don’t miss out on the freshly picked samples!
The highlight of the spice tour is the traditional Swahili lunch, featuring the spices and fruits you’ve seen on the farm. It’s a delightful explosion of flavors that’ll leave you craving more!
Whether you’re a history buff, a nature lover, a foodie, or a beach bum, the Prison Island and Spice Farm Combo Tour has something for everyone. This journey of discovery and sensory delight is more than just a tour – it’s a Zanzibari experience that will leave a lasting impression.
